Kidney Connect

The Kidney Connect programme offers one-to-one peer support by linking people affected by kidney disease with a volunteer who has personal experience of living with kidney disease, donation or transplantation.

Kidney Connect provide understanding, encouragement and practical insights to help others navigate unfamiliar or challenging stages of their kidney journey.

The programme is open to people living with kidney disease, kidney donors and recipients, as well as their whānau, carers and supporters. Connections can take place by phone, online, or in person, depending on what suits both people involved.

What is the Kidney Connect programme?

Kidney Connect are volunteers who draw on their own lived experience to offer non-clinical support. They provide a listening ear, share knowledge gained from their journey, and help others feel less alone by connecting with someone who understands.

How can a Kidney Connection support you?

A Kidney Connection may be able to:

  • Support people newly diagnosed with kidney disease, starting dialysis, or preparing for a transplant (as a recipient or living donor) to find helpful information and resources.
  • Share personal experiences to help others better understand treatments, lifestyle changes and everyday challenges associated with kidney disease.
  • Support partners, carers, whānau and friends by helping them adjust to their role, find support networks and access relevant information.
  • Provide social and emotional support to those who may feel isolated or overwhelmed while supporting someone with kidney disease.

Please note: Those involved in Kidney Connect are not health professionals. They cannot provide medical advice, mental health counselling, or guidance about medications, test results, treatments, or specialist referrals.

Who can request a Kidney Connection?

You can request a Kidney Connection if you are:

  • Living with chronic kidney disease at any stage
  • Newly diagnosed with early or advanced kidney disease
  • Exploring dialysis options
  • Preparing for a kidney transplant
  • Considering becoming a living kidney donor
  • A partner, carer, whānau member or supporter of someone with kidney disease.

How will I be matched with a Kidney Connection?

Once your request is received, we will review our Kidney Connect register to find the best possible match based on shared experiences. Your Kidney Friend will then contact you to arrange an initial conversation. We also provide guidance to help both parties make the most of the connection, including how often to connect and what you might like to talk about.
